STRICTER ATTENTION
TO PHYSICAL FITNESS

“Closer attention will have to bo given to the physical fitness of drivers of cars,” said the Coroner, Air A. J. Graham, at an inquest, when evidence was given by a medical witness that lie would not have passed as physically (it to drive a car a man whom he examined in. January last aid who finis killed in an accident last month. Counsel lor the relatives said there ouglit to he more scrutiny before licences were renewed. They were just reissued automatically on the pay\inent of five shillings.
The Coroner said that here was a case in which, months earlier than the accident occurred, the driver was not considered eligible for a certificate of physical fitness. He was not satisfied that all car drivers were in a lit physical condition.
The inquest concerned the death of John Thomas, aged (id, of Bunny-t-horpe, who was,killed when his car crashed into the Alangaone stream on August 24. The Coroner said Hie cause of the accident was difficult to determine, but was due to one of nvo reasons—either Thomas was suffering from the effects of liquor or had a sudden attack of vertigo through the condition of his health.
