QUEENSLAND BETTING LEGISLATION. AUCKLAND, September 20. * Legislation whs passed by the Queensland Government, seven months ago, providing severe penalties for •betting outside of racecourses. This had revolutionised racing in Queensland, according to Mr P. J. O’Shea, n prominent solicitor of tlie Queensland Turf Club. Mr O’Shea is a through passenger on the Mariposa to the Unitod States. Mr O’Shea said this legislation had c largely rid Queensland of starting price betting, and had helped the clubs to pay more substantial, stakes. . This betting system did not interfere 1 with the paddock, . but- ,it cut 1 the f' foundation from under the fVct’bf the 0 Ledger and the'Flat enclosures. Pro- v viously, his club’s average attendance a on the flat was 750, whereas, immed- a iately after the enactment of the new 1 legislation, they had an attendance of t 5000 people in two days. The attendance in the ledger enclosure also in- f creased by forty per cent. 'The increas- r ed attendances were reflected in the ! 1 totalisator, which at the 1936 meeting * put through £42.000 as compared with c £‘6-1,000 this year. 1
