TENNIS
WEST COAST TOURNAMENT. The West Coast Touranient Committee met on Tuesday evening to receive entries and finalise arrangements for the tournament commencing on 27th January. Present:—Dr. Oakey, Itev. Carr, Messrs Guthrey, Freitas, Sanders, Turley, McClusky, and Miss O. Stapleton. Apologies were received from Re\. Father O’Gorman and Mrs Eeclesfield. It was decided to ask Mr A\ arren to act in place of Mr Barnhill on the committee.
Over 60 names had been received, covering a total of 180 entries. None had been received from ,Westport, which was a regrettable feature. However, a number of prominent Canterbury players had entered, including Miss T. Poole. N.Z. ladies’ doubles champion, and A. Atkinson, Canterbury boys’ doubles champion. It was decided to accept further entries up till Friday when the draw must be made—this will give an opportunity for outside and local players. Various committees were set up, and it was decided to seek the assistance of interested persons who are prepared to supervise the events. Mr Agnew’s offer to provide ball-boys was accepted. It was decided to arrange for temporary seating at the Hokitika court, also sight screens. SOCIAL. The following programme was adopted :—Wednesday evening : ‘Welcome evening at St. Mary’s Club Rooms, when all local players are invited to attend and meet visiting competitors. Thursday evening Free. Annual meeting of the West Coast Lawn Tennis Association, Friday evening : —'Tournament dance in tho Soldiers’ Hall, when trophies will be presented should the tournament be finalised.
