MELBOURNE CUP
TIPS HATCHED liY HEN. Seeking a tip for the Melbourne Cup, Mr C. W. Mason, 61" Murrumbeemi, disturbed his broody hen, and wrote the'name of a' horse in the Cup on each of 15 eggs (says an Australian paper). The hen settled down again, and MiMason waited to see which egg would be hatched first.
The egg Conandale was thrown out, of the nest. The horse Conoiulale was scratched soon alter.
When the setting hatched, Golden Promise was sickly and soon died. The horse Golden Promise was scratched. The chicken Rob Roy caught its leg in the wire netting, and' had to he destroyed. The same day the horse Rob Rov injured his leg while training and had to be scratched.
Mr Mason’s cup favourites were hatched in the following order:
Amalia 1, Hot Shot 2, Sporting Blood 3, and half a shell away. Talking. (Incidentally none of these horses secured a place in the actual race).
