PRESS CONFERENCE

EMPIRE NEWS

BETTER EXCHANGE SERVICE.

(United Press Association—By Electric

Telegraph—Copyright)

(Received this day at 10.15 a.m.)

CAPETOWN February 8

The press conference agreed to a resolution proposed by Air Norman Smith, honorary president of the Canadian press, recommending newspaper publishers of each Dominion to give early consideration to the establishment of co-operative news associations owned and controlled by newspapers, in the belief that this would lead to an interchange of news within the Empire. Air Smith’s idea is that each Dominion establish a co-operative news service as a unit, and the dominion interchange of news would automatically follow. Smith visualises a future Empire press knit by great wireless stations girdling the globe, with British news exchanged with British newspapers, but until each had built up its own, co-operative News Associations, there could n ot be the foundation of an Empire fabric. Mr AlcCay (Australia) said the Australian Press was thoroughly in accord with tlm desire to a better interchange among the Dominions. Mr Geddes (New Zealand) said a step of this kind would be strongly supported by New Zealand newspapers.

Indian and African delegates also supported the scheme.
