WESTPORT, November 9
A sensational turn was given to the contest for the Buller seat when, last night, at the conclusion of a meeting which Mr R. 'Semple, M.P., addressed in support of the candidature of Mr P. C. Webb (Labour), Mr lan Simson, Independent candidate, seconded a motion expressing confidence in the Labour party and Mr Webb. The two candidates then shook hands, amid applause from the large audience in the Theatre IRoyal.
A .further sensation was caused by the .announcement that Mr Simson wouhl leave, on Saturday, via '.Christchurch, to speak in the Town Hall, Wellington, on Monday on the exchange rate, the .sales tax, the unemployment tax and the iCentrx] Bank. He ha* challenged Mr Coates and Sir Henry Buckleton, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, to discuss these questions, and says that if he fails to gain the verdict of the audience he will resign in favour of Mr P. C. Webb for the Buller seat.
