CORRUPTION AMONG POLICE
ALLEGATIONS 1 ' IN VICTORIA.
MELBOURNE, October 9
•A public inquiry ordered by the Victorian Government into charges of corruption • against certain police officers began dp-day. An allegation relating to traffic iu cocaine, involves former .Defectives Coffey and Lacey, and former Plain-Clothes Constable' McGahery.s.
They are charged with having demanded a bribe from a man they arrested, fort haying prohibited, drugs iu his ebssessibn, that they received two bribes of .£SO each, and that they procured him to dispose of cocaine and to account' to them for money, and it was also alleged .there was improper conduct iiv regard to the recovery and restoration of stolen motor cars.
An inquiry will be made into complaints that the Chief Commissioner of Police failed to take appropriate action. against members of the force, wfio were concerned in these matters.
