MAGAZINE BANNED

INDISCREET STUDENTS THREE OFFENDING ARTICLES WELLINGTON, October 10. Certain passages contained in the Victoria University College review, “The Spike,” which made its appearance last week, have given rise to the Professorial?, Board issueing a general ban on its sale in its present form. Already a large number of copies have been sold within the college, but when certain articles, came before the notice of the authorities further distribution or sale was prohibited. “The vSpikd” is published once annually and besides being a general record of university . activity, is the medium by which the students express themselves in original prose and verse. In the .past many contributions have

been made of considerable literary merit, students who in later years attained distinction in the world of letters having contributed to its columns. It has never been regarded as a radical organ in any seiise of the word and no restriction has been placed upon its sale previously. It is understood that in the last issue of “The Spike” three articles in particular have caused offence. One entitled “Untwisted Teaching,” contains criticism directed at the teaching of the law faculty at the college and two others make comment on the present social order. The chairman of the Professorial Board) Professor W, LI. Gould, stated this evening that'definitely no further distribution oL •“The, Spiky./’ would be permitted in its present form. It has been proposed that offending pages be removed, new articles being substituted in their, place and the magazine being completely rebound. Nothing definite lias been arranged, however, and it ,: s understood that there is a. possibility of, there being a meeting of protest against the Professoral Board’s action.
