Failing to not.ee a shunting engine which v. as moving quickly along the wharf at Lyttelton. Averill Lester, aged 18, jumped from the platform and 101 l in I'ront of the engine last evening, just after the departure of the Maori. The girl had evidently wished to get out of tile crowd, and it was only the prompt action of the driver and fireman that averted a tragedy. They applied the brakes and brought the engine to a standstill just as it touched the girl. The cowcatcher tore tile heel from the girl’s shoe, but beyond slight bruises and shock, she was none the worse.

One of her friends, however, fainted
