TORRENTIAL RAIN

FIREBALLS, LIGHTNING, FLOODS. (Australian Press Association) (Received this day at 10.25 a.m.) SYDNEY, November 20. A severe thunderstorm, accompanied by hail and iram, broke over 'Sydney .from the southward at 7.30 o’clock on Sunday morning. It continued for 90 minutes. Considerable damage was done by washouts and floodings in the city and suburbs. SYDNEY, November 21. The State meterologist (Mr Mares) stated that at times during yesterday’s storm, the rain fell at the approximate rate of six inches an hour. In half an hour, from 7.20 to 7.50. o’clock. 210 points were registered. Nothing in the records can equal this. Storm water channels were insufficient to cope with the deluge in sections of the suburbs of, Balmain, Camperdown and Redfern, where shops and houses were flooded to a depth of two feet, while in the city a wall of water burst through the windows of eight shops in George Street. A tram w&9 struck by lightning at Mosman, but no passengers ,‘wore •aboard, and the crew escaped. Fireballs were also reported from widespread points. In one case a little girl had just left her bedroom when a fireball crashed through the roof above the bed with a shattering explosion. Low lying areas in every suburb suffered, and hundreds of backyards and homes are flooded.
