FELL THOROUGH WHARF
CHILD SAVED AT SUVA. HALF CASTE’S BRAVE ACTION. SUVA, Jail. 18. A remarkable accident occurred last Friday night at King’s wharf. Mr anj Mi's Castles went to fish, accompanied by tlieir four-.year-old daughter, and as was her habit the mother laid a mg on the wharf for her child to lie on while they fished. When she looked lound for the girl, who had been standing alongside her, she had disappeared. Then they saw that a rotten plank had broken, and they cried for help. Dr Buekeridge and bis wile were approaching, and when the doctor threw the beam of his torch through the hole they could see the child floating, as if dead, in the waters of the harbour. A half-caste boy came up and cried that a shark had just gone by. He at once scrambled down on to the stringer and dived in and secured tlie body, and with the aid of the doctor and the father, the child was brought, on to the wharf. She recovered alter first-aid treatment.
The action of flic lad was a hrave one, because of his belief l.liaf a sliarlc was near. This is file lirsf lime any person has fallen through the wharl, although many times trucks with goods have done so
