N 0.5 SCHEME CONDEMNED. MASS MEETING AT LOWER HTJTT. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 22. None of the men at the Lower Hutt were on the relief works to-day, nor were there any of the men on the Petone Borough works. The 'city relief workers are not affected by the dispute. The Lower Hutt men’s delegates met Mr Cook, Secretary of the New Zealand Workers’ Union and Mr Jois. Roberts, Secretary of the Alliance of Labour last night, and they were promised the full moral support of those organistions, and given the promise of a. meeting being called on Monday to consider the granting of financial support. There was a mass meeting of the men this morning at Lower Hutt. It was resolved that all of the men engaged on the relief works in New Zealand should follow the action of the Lower Hutt men. They condemned tne Number Five Scheme, and also the Charitable Aid rations, and called upon all of the relief workers to organise with a view to ending the No. 5 Scheme, and demanding a five day week, at full union rates of pay. Another resolution passed by" the meeting aims at. a petition fo ask for the resignation of Mr Strand, as Mayor of Lower Hutt. The representatives of the Pe(tone unemployed then said that their executive had pledged themselves to wholehearted moral and financial support of the Lower Hutt men. The wives of the relief workers present fomied themselves into a committee to arrange the distribution of food. DUNEDIN SENTENCES . WELLINGTON, January 21. Replying to the representations of Dunedin 'Labour members who desire a. remission of the sentences on the men convicted on charges of beinc concerned in the recent unemployed disorder the Hon. ,1. G. Cobbe, Minister of Justice, stated that he has no authority to' interfere with the Magistrate’s sentences, hut will make inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the case.
