DISCUSSION ON FINANCE.
further taxation likely.
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Jan. 18
Cabinet sat this evening discussing the finacial position of the country, and also plans for a legislation programme for the emergency session. Mary important decisions, however, will be relayed until recommendations have been made by v the Special Economy Commission. The personnel of the Economy Committee will be announced shortly. Tim Prime Minister hopes to make aa announcement regarding the commission before the end of the week. It is expected that the Commission will submit an interim report in order that its recommendations may lie embodied in the legislation of the emergency session.
A declining revenue yield and a need for additional funds for unemployment relief, make it apparent that increased taxation is likely if the Unemployment Board’s work is to be extended. The removal of industrial award retrictions, checking employment, and especially relating to the employment of apprentices, is believed to be another important line of legislation likely to be dealt with by the Government.
