THREE HOUSES BURNT. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) NAPIER, March 23. Three houses at . West Shore were totally destroyed by fire on Saturday evening. The houses were occupied by Messrs Millet, E. Aplin and Martin. The absence of water was responsible for the spread of flames to these buildings. Before the big upheaval, they were just across the road from the Inner Harbour, but since then no water was near enough for the big fire engine to be used successfully. FRESH WATER. SPRINGS. CAUSED BY ’QUAKE. NAPIER,, March 23. An extraordinary submarine occurrence caused by the earthquake has been the opening of cold fresh water spx-ings. Consequent on the existence of large areas on the surface . where fresh water was obtained, six springs have appeared situated in a circle round Pania Reef, a few mites off the Bluff. It can be seen that they ate at least two feet in diameter. It is some weeks since the spot was visited, an inspection having been made by the Napier Harbour Beard Captain White Parsons, the Engineer-, in-chief of the Public Works Department, Mr J; W- Furkert and the Government Geologist, Dr. Henderson, a few days after the earthquake. At that time the water from, the springs was quite fresh, but it is not known) whether the springs are still flowing. Since the big ’quake nine vessels, including ocean going boats, successfully berthed at the breakwater. Coastal! boats, which usually went to the Inner Harbour, are now going to the breakwater.
