BAIRD CUP COMPETITION.
The weather qti Saturday. proving propitious, the Hokitika Tennis Club was enabled to hold the final of the Baird Cup, monthly competition. This competition, a somewhat original one in tennis circles, was anaugurated at the beginning of the season to provide an avenue for the allocation of a handsome cup presented by the former President of the Club, Dr. Baird, on his departure from Hokitika The procedure has been for a draw to be made for partners for combined doubles, the pairs allotted handicaps, and a three game tournament- played the total points scored by each pair being credited individually. Thus with u different partner every month mar : gins were soon established and competition was stimulated by the efforts of the leaders to retain their margin and by the effort's of the others to recover lost ground and reduce the points of prevoius victors, With the hazard of the draw and general high standard of play a highly interesting position evolved and it was not until the final game on Saturday afternoon that a forecast of the result- could be made. In this game Mrs Randall, partnered for the day by Mr P. Blank (plus five) played <T. G, Mclntosh and Miss D. Stevenson (scr.) Mrs Randall requiring 24 points of the then highest competitor Miss J. Davidson, A dose and hard fought game saw the lady collect the necessary points and become the seasonal winner by 5 points.
