BEATING A BOOKIE
A SWINDLER CAUGHT. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 23. An admission that he ha swindled a man, described as a well known bookmaker, was made by John Henry Manhood, charged with fradulently obtaining £4B from Harry Clifton Solely and attempting to obtain £lB4 from Sallery. The police said Manhood lived at Cambridge, and on the day of Takapuna spring races he posted a leter addressed to himself at Cambridge. The address was written on a slip of paper lightly gummed on the envelope. On receiving the letter he immediately went to Auckland by service car, removed the slip of paper and wroete on the same envelope Sallery's address.
The leter contained bets. Having addressed the letter to the bookmaker he purposely dropped it in Auckland Post Office, when fin omoinl discovered it and placed it in Sallery’s box. The letter thus bore the Cambridge .‘Post Office date stamp of the morning of the races and Sallery paid out £49. Accused attempted to obtain a lai'ger sum of £TB4 at the time of the Auckland races, this time dropping the letter under the Post Office door. The official who found it, endorsed on the back that it had been found. Sallery became suspicious and Manhood was caught. Sentence was deferred.
