The northern drive against Nanking has been successful, after four days battle, according to an official nortliern communique. Despite the lienvie t. rains, the Northerns occupied KiVeith suburbs and Lungbai railway, disarming the Nanking Brigade and inflicting .fifteen hundred casualties. DANGER IN CHINA. POWERS PLAN PROTECTION. FROM COMMUNIST FORCES. LONDON, August 10. The “Daily Telegraph’s” diplomatic editor says: The British, American, Japanese and French Governments are at present consulting with a view to concerted naval measures for the safety df their own nationals at Hankow and at other of the Yangtse river ports that are threatened by the Communist forces. Their action is inspired purely by-humanitarian motives and it should in.nowise be construed as an intervention in China’s domestic feuds. They will only . operate where the Nanking Government is unable to protect foreign life and property. It is most gratifying -that the leading Treaty'Powers have been able to agree 'promptly on* ii common plan of action. This agreement between the Govermn‘ments follows fine co-operation by the responsible local representative of the four Powers. The military prospects of Marshal Chiang-kai-Shek and the Nanking (Nationalist) Government are not regarded as hopeful, in view ol the Southern Communists’ advance down the Yangtsekiang River. .Marshal Chiang Kai Shek’s chietf diffieiility is a shortage of money.
