AUCKLAND RACING CLUB
' ” ■ '• THE TOTE TAX. “By Telegraph- -Per Press Assor’.ation.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 11. Referring to the increased totalisiatbr tax at the annual meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, Sir Edwin Mitchefson said it was at •..present impossible to gauge the result. The increase : Would imperially fall on the investors but probably would decrease the turnover on the machine causing a decreased revenue, which would most certainly bring lower prize money.; A reduced attendance must also be .looked for as well as smaller fields, qnd a subsequent drop in revenue would. prohably involve many clubs, particularly the smaller ones, in a great.j-lops. A further serious consequence would be the tendency to increase '.betting with bookmakers. If the. Dominion was to pay its way, increased taxation was necessary but great pare should be exercised to save the'geese that laid the golden eggs.
