CRANKSHAAV SHIELD. AVON BY HOKITIKA. (Grey Argus.) ' There was a good public attendance at Victoria Park yesterday afternoon, when the annual seven-a-side Ladies’ Hockey Tournament for the Crankshaw Shield was competed for by seven teams. The play in each match was interesting, and showed the players to be in good form. The shield which was presented in 1926 by Mr Crankshaw to the Mawhera Club and donated by that club to the Association l'or annual competition, has been won each year by Mawhera, until yesterday’s tournament, when tlie Hokitika A team was successful in annexing the trophy after a willing encounter in the final with tne holders. Following are the results of the matches played:— Mawhera A 2, defeated Stars 0. Goals were scored by AT.. Furness and H. Leach. Hokitika B defeated Alawliera 8., There was no score in this match but Hokitika won by a hit over tlie line after five minutes extra play. United A 4, .defeated United B 0. Goals were scored by J. Taaffe (2), L. Boddy, and K. McGirr. Semi-finals: Hokitika A 3, defeated Hokitika Bi 1. Goals were scored for the A team by Airs Butson and M. Sumner (2), and for the losers D. McAVhirter goaled. Both goals, for the winning team were netted by Al. Sumner. Messrs P. Richmond and J. Butland were referees. PLAYER ORDERED OFF. AVhile it is not an unusual occurrence for a footballer to so far tax the patience of a referee that, he gets his “ march fug order,” it is somewhat unique for a lady hockey player to he told by the man in control to “ stand on the line.” Such a happening provided a comedy-drama at A r ictoria Park yesterday, however, during the final of the seven-a-side tournament, contested between Mawhera and Hokitika. The latter team had already notched one goal, and were again showing a hold front, when the opposing full-backs, Alisses Sumner (Hokitika) and Hannam (Alawliera) came together and attempted to outplay each other in the stroke ifor the ball. In the opinion of Referee Butland, Miss Hannam obstructed her opponent, and he warned her, but an answer to him to “ shut up,” was replied to, when the referee pointed for her to stand on the side lino. Aliss Hannam, however, was keen to see out the game, and did not obey tlie command. Referee Butland did not Avaver from his decisiop that she should leave the field, and the comedy then entered into the drama. Players and spectators quickly flocked to the scene, and expressed their personal opinions as to whether or not the player should remain, or abide by the referee’s decision. Entreaties to 'Mr Butland to allow the player to continue; instruction to hold up the games till he should go off; to explain his reasons for his drastic action; to prove that he was not “one-eved”; and numerous other demands were directed at t 1 referee by twenty voices in discord; but he was unmoved, and finally Mawhern decided to carry on with six players. Aliss Hannam, following the advice of her captain, leift the field, but not before she had eased her pentup indignation by delivering a parting volley at the referee. From the side line tlie spectators stood in separate bands and their shouts of encouragement to their respective teams, or their howls of disapproval of the opposition, made a spirited finale to the season’s hockey.
