been considered by your Committee, consisting of Councillors Armstrong, Evans, and myself, and we beg to recommend that the ofFer bo accepted, and be subsidised by the Council pound for pound, making a total of £6O, and be expended by employing unemployed ex-soldiers on makinfi concrete drainpipes.—For the committee, —

GEORGE PERRY. —Reeivcd and approved, the Fore man to arrange. SEWELL STREET DRAIN.

The distance from tho river up to the rise between Hampden and Park Street is about 40 chains, the number of pipes required per chain is 23, the total number being 920 to finish the drain.

The section from the river to Weld Street is 13 chains, requiring 299 pipes, of this number we have one hundred in stock, and about thirty which we put under Weld Street about eighteen months ago. Air Alillnor is making on an average about seventy a month. The drain will need to be excavated the section up to AVcld Street is fairly deep and the cost I estimate at about £ig per chain. From AVeld Street up to Hampden Street tho excavation is much easier, and the cost would he less about £9 per chain. Tho pipes could he laid in the wooden drain without excavation, but as the drain is rather small it would bo difficult in making the connections with the various drains coming into it. Ol course the cost" would ho less.

By sinking down about every liMf chain we could lower the pipes dov a and put them together, hut it would ho impossible to cement them together, on account of there not being room enough, and as there is a good deal pi sewage coming down this drain, I do not think it could be done satisfactorily without excavation. —Received. FOREMAN’S REPORT FOR JULY. I beg to report tlie following work was carried out during tlie month:

A block occurred in Tailored Street drain, between -AVeld and Stafford Streets, which was cleaned out. The dr.aiu at the corner of Park and Revell Streets running behind Mr Shannon’s property was cleaned out. A drain was put in to Air Gilford’s property across Hall Street, connecting with the concrete drain, also a drain at Air Goodfellow’s in Brittan Street. Forty foot of one-foot concrete pipes were put in at tile corner of Wold and Rolleston Streets in front of Air Thompson’s, Brittan Street drain between Hampden and Park Streets was cleaned out.

The footpath in Fitsdierbert, Street between Stafford and Hampden Streets was cleaned and gravelled, also a portion of fotopath alongside Cass Square was levelled and gravclold, tlie remaining part of the roadway in front of the Power Station being also gravelled. Throe new pipes wore put in the water main this month : one eight inch on the cast boundary at the bottom ol the racecourse hill, and two four-inch, one on Gibson Quay and one at tlie corner of Bealcy and Stafford Streets. Two water connections were renewed, one at J. Smith’s in Rolleston Street, and one at ATiss .Morgan’s in Hall Street. A connection was also put in at Air Goodfellow’s in Brittan Street. Crossings were put in at Atr AV. AAilson’s in Davie Street and at Afr Goodfellow’s in Brittan Street. Several fire-plugs were raised in different parts of the town and leaks attended to. The average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was eleven feet. —Received and adopted. From Manager Abattoirs (J.
