Bleak weather was experienced in South Taranaki for King's Birthday. In places an occasional shower of rain mixed with hail fell, reminding people that winter has come. Various sports were held, and, considering the conditions, the attendance of the public was satisfactory. The weather has im-! proved under the influence of the higher barometric pressure, and prob-' ably a few days of clear skies will be experienced. ■ I
Mr. H. R. Climie, engineer to the! Wairarapa Electric Power Board, who is leaving to take up a similar position with the Taranaki Power Board, was on Thursday the. recipient of presentations from the combined staffs. Mr. C. J. Drewit, who asked Mr Climie to accept a case of cutlery, spoke of the good relationship that had always exist, ed between the chief and his staff, and wished him success at Taranaki. Mr. i Climie suitably replied. At the ladies' hockey tournament a.t Hawera yesterday a number of the players were descendants of the Maori race. The girls played keenly and showed that the sport is one which appeals to them. A London cable says Mr. J. H.
