(From Our Own Correspondent.)

CHILDREN'S PARK

There was a large attendance at a special meeting called tor the purpose • ot" discussing tne additions to tne Progress Committee's Children's Park proposal. Mr. G. W. Tayler (Mayor)" occupied the chair. He explained the object of the meeting, and in doing so stated that the xiroposul was a very worthy one and would be greatly ap- ' predated in the future. Mr. C. A. Wilkinson/as a member of the sub-committee, reported on the new additional proposal, and explained that the new scheme would give- ah ! outlet to three streets, namely. Mountain Road, Bridge Street, and Stanners Street. The committee suggested the purchase of Mr. Judd's house and land for the purpose of providing a set of Plunket rooms and rest room. An outlet to Mountain Road was provided for by Messrs Ware, Taplen and Ritter and Delauney donating sufficient land , tor a, right-of-way. j Mr. M. E. Fitzgerald endorsed the remarks of Mr. Wilkinson, and further explained that it was not possible to secure the land that they desired, owing to th© price asked being considered too , high. Mr. W. J. Tristram asked what were the conditions of the donating of the right-of-way, and Mr. Fitzgerald re- ' t™ • tne Portion of land donated by Mr. Ware was given on the condi- • tion that he had the right to use the same as an outlet to his property which included cart traffic. Mr Tris- • tram strongly objected to tjhis on the ' ££° Un, d -i ,that lt would te dangerous to | the children frequenting the park. ! Mr. I. J. Bridger, chairman of the Progress Committee, stated that it was .. very satisfactory to the committee to see such keen interest displayed in the proposal He took it that it was only the additional proposal that was before the meeting, as the Progress Com. mittee s scheme had already been approved of by a public meeting and the committee had a mandate to go on with the scheme. The cost of the addition would be very heavy, and in view of or the suggested appeal for a soldiers' memorial he asked whether it would , be wise to attempt the large scheme. However, he conceded that it had many good features. ! Mr. C. A. Wilkinson thought that this meeting should decide on the scheme as a whole and not have two proposals before the meeting. ■ Considerable discussion followed as to the position of the former meeting I Eventually Mr. ■W.
