ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
HALF-HOLIDAY QUESTION. A largely-attended meeting of business people in favour of retaining/the Thursday half-holiday was held at the (Juamber. of Commerce rooms on Friday evening, Mr. W. Thqrpe (chairman of the Thursday half-holiday committee) occupied the chair. The chairman stated that a number of people who had signed the petition for V pbU were voting for Thursday, and he believed a number of others who were now in favour of Saturday would vote for, Thursday if the position was put .before them in a convincing manner. No evidence, had been brought forward by the advocates of Saturday that business would be benefited or increased byadopting that day. Many speakers, strongly stressed the danger of Eltham .finding itself in the positionof deciding on Saturday only to find that neighbouring towns had not decided on that day. The opinion was universal that such a position would -be a severe blow' at the trade of the town, and as there was not and could not be any guarantee that either Hawera or Stratford polls would' fix| Saturday, every endeavour should be marie to Have Thursday selected at the coming poll.
