ATTEMPTED ROBBERY.
AUCKLAND, Oct. 1 ■. An unsuccessful attempt was made to rob the safe of the Newmarket branch of the National Bank of New Zealand tonight. The cashier and counter clerk left the building at 5 p.m., all being secured. The counter clerk returned shortly before 7 o'clock to do some work, and while standing outside he heard a loud explosion. Accompanied by a passer-by, he unlocked the door, finding the place full of smoke. An attempt had been made upon the safe and the lock was shattered, the brass fittings being strewn round the room as well as some soft substance evidently used to pack the charge. A piece of fuse was found in front of the safe. The police were immediately summoned, but found nothing to indicate how the intruders gained an entrance, the doors and windows being intact. There is a right-of-way at the back of the building, from which an entrance could be effected unobserved by anybody. The safe only contained £8.
