A fatal accident occurred at the Roxburgh Amalgamated Sluicing Company s claim on Saturday afternoon. A number of men were repairing the race when a sudden fall of earth took place, killing almost instantaneously George Taylor and James McNab. The others escaped unhurt. Taylor was a married man, and McNab is believed to have relatives in Dunedin. A cottage in Cumberland street, owned by • Miss Robb, was with its contents destroyed by fire this morning. The newly-married wifo of a farmrr named Richard Thomas, of Hautapu, committed suicide at a nirrsing home, at Cambridge, by taking carbolic, acid. Dc- | ceased had been nervously depressed for some time, and frequently said she would take her life or some one else would kill her. A verdict of suicide whilst temporarily deranged was returned. AUCKLAND, September 26. The barque Onyx, which was driven ashore by tne gale at Kaipara on Friday, has been floated. The vessel is undamaged. VALMERSTON N., September 26. The Supreme Court opened this morning with a heavy list of criminal and civil actions. In addition there are four cases on appeal, and four petitions in divorce. Addressing the grand jury, Mr Justice Cooper said he could nob congratulate them on the lightness of the calender which, however, only contained ordinary offences, none being of a serious nature. He expressed regret at the number of cases and referring to the recent presentment at Wanganui on the duties of grand juries said he would not express an opinion on the important and responsible duties of gentlemen summoned to carry out a function as the law now stands, though it was held by some to be a relic of the past. A true bill was found against W. H. Baxter, for breaking and entering the Bank of ■ New Bouth Wales. Accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months' im- < priaonment. NEW PLYMOUTH, September 26. In the Supreme Court this morning, before Mr Justice Edwards, Thomas Brown, who in the lower court had pleaded guilty to a charge of procuring abortion, was sentenced to five years' imprisonment. Edward Arthur Raven, in connection with the same offence, was remanded, while the circumstances of his turning King's evidence are submitted to Wellington.

WELLINGTON, September 26. The Arbitration Court opened this morning. The President stated that the Court would sit here for a fortnight and then adjourn for the Court of Appeal sittings, resuming thereafter. Tho first cases dealt with interpretations of awards and breaches.
