Marine Commission.

(PBB PBBSS ASSOCIATION. Wellington, July 20.

Captain Edwin was further crossexamined by Mr Atkinson with a view to testing his memory. When the Premier asked for a report as to the genuinesu, or otherwise, of the examinations of Captainß Bendall and McLellan, witness certified he was satisfied they were both correct .without looking again at papers, though he had not seen them since the examinations two years previous. Witness bad every confidence in his fellow examiner, Allman.

Witness did not remember having acted in confidential capacity for Yon Schoen between 1880 and 1886, bat he transacted seme financial business for him (Yon Schoen) when he was absent in Fiji in 1884. Witness, however, did not regard this as confidential business. Marine Department now informed can. dictates of points on which they ha been failed- bat witness was noi a war, this was the outcome of the representa" tions made by Yon Schoen, nor was h e aware it was the outcome of an impos* sible question set by witness in once exam he conducted.

Captain Allman was next witness.

Mr Hanlon put in Allman's state* ments, whioh were read by the Premier, and said as these contained the whole of Allman's knowledge of the case he would not ask him any more questions and would simply submit him for cross-examination.

Cross-examined by Dr Findlay witness detailed his nautical experiences which commenced when he was twelve years of age, till he left the Union Company "to take up this infernal position whioh had got him into trouble," or he would have been with the company yet. In all his experience he never lost a vessel or life. In fact he had never rubbed the paint off a vessel. There was not a particle of impropriety in. the examination which witness passed in Sydney for an extra master's certi6cato. That story waß spread by Yon Soboen.
