Dunbdin, July 19.
The continuous decline in school attendance was discussed at the Education Board meeting to-day. Several of the teachers wrote that there was no prospect of increase, for some years to come at the least, as there were no >, young children in their districts. Country registrars reported that very few births were registered. The Chairman (Dr. Brown) said it ' was alarming to study the vital statistics of the colony. The chairman and Mr Gallaway were appointed a com- \ mittee to make enquiries. Three months' notice was ordered to go to one teacher in eaoh of 12 sohools to dispense with their services, these sohools now being overstaffed owing to the attendance having been down for two quarters. Notice was sent to seven other schools in whioh the attendance has been down for one quarter, that if it has not improved by September 80th, assistant teachers will be withdrawn.
