PARLIAMENT.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Wednesday, June 7. immigration. In reply to a question it was elicited that immigration proposals would be made, as also a proposal for re-establishing free immigration for females. EMPLOYERS LIABILITY BILL. Mr. M. W. Green moved the second reading of the Employers Liability Bill, explaining that it simply adapted to the circumstances of the colony what was the present law of England. Mr. Bathgate" strongly supported the Bill. Mr. Rolleston opposed the principle, but thought the details required further consideration, and suggested that the Bill be referred to a select committee. Mr. M. W. Green was willing to accept the suggestion. Messrs. Holmes, Connolly, Swanson, and Levestam supported the Bill generally, and it was read a second time, and ordered to be referred to a select committee. DISTRESS FOR RENT BILL. Mr. Holmes moved the second reading of the Distress for Rent Bill, which was opposed by Mr. Shrhnski, and after some discussion and two divisions of 51 to 33 and 42 to 21, the Bill was read a second time. EVIDENCE AMENDMENT BILL. The second reading of this Bill was agreed to on Mr. Hutchison^ motion. IN COMMITTEE. The House went into committee on the Eight Hours Bill.
Thursday, June S. STANDING ORDEBB. The standing orders committee brought up their report of amendments required to prevent undue use of forms of the House in prolonging debates. TE WHITI In reply to Mr. Turnbull, Mr. Bryce said Te Whiti had received the communication from Government sent through Mr. Parris. new bills, &c. Five new bills were introduced, and two private bills passed through certain stages. A number of formal motions for returns were agreed to and passed. THE KAITANGATA BELIEF FUND. The remainder of the Bitting was occupied in discussing a motion of Mr. Joyce's for the appointment of a committee to inquire into the administration of the Kaitangata Relief Fund. He explained that he did not at all wish to impugn the action of the trustees or to throw any slur on them ; and at Mr. Montgomery 's suggestion, he struck out certain words which might seem to do so. Mr. Dick and Mr. Rolleston opposed the motion ; and ultimately the debate was interrupted by the House, at 5.30 p.m., adjourning till next day.
