HAWERA LICENSING COM. MITTEE.

The Committee met at noon to-day, for the transaction of the aununl business. Present — Messrs. Livingston (chairman), C." Tait, J. Flynn, and J. Winks. The following new licenses were granted :—: — Alfred Kirk, Royal Hotel ; and Frederick Wallis, Commercial Hotel. A new license was granted to Arthur Owen for the Egmont Hotel. In the case of the application of Mr. Kirk, Mr. Ilamincrton, who appeared on behalt of applicant, undertook that a second staircaso leading from the upper storey be added, as requirod'by the Act. Henry Cook, Empire- Hotel, applied for a renowal. The " chairman

said the police had reported that the Act had not been complied with, inasmuch as a second staircase had not been provided. Mr. Cook informed the committee that the police had not notified to him their objection in the direction indicated. Mr. Hamerton as amicus curias, pointed out that several licensing committees had decided that rope ladders would be sufficient, as being in numerous cases more convenient than staircases. Mr. Cook said that his staircase was unusually wide, but he would, if required, affix ropes to the feet of each bedstead in his house. The license wa3 granted subject to the alterations indicated. The renewal of 0. Pleasants' license for the Railway Hotel was granted ; as also was that of John Prosser for the Hawera Hotel, subject to addition of a staircase. Mr. Matthews, on behalf of Mr. Owen, and Mr. Hamerton, for Messrs. Kirk and Wallis, applied for an extension license till midnight. Both of the legal gentlemen engaged spoke warmly on the subject, the former putting in a memorial signed by the Mayor and citizens in favor of extension. Mr. Hamerton pointed out that the town was the centre of a floating population, and remarked that it was absurd to expect boarders to be locked out or go to bed at 10 o'clock. Mr. Livingston expressed himself as being personally opposed to the extension. After a brief consultation the chairman announced that the majority of the committee being in favor of extension, the applications would be granted. The meeting then terminated.
