PATEA, This Day.

Mr. Cowern regards the sale of Education Reserves at the most successful of its kind held in the district. There was a large attendance, spirited bidding, and splendid prices. The following are the names of the purchasers : — Section 24, Mr. C. Days, IBs. Gd. per acre ; section 23, Mr. D. Hughes, 135.; section 22, Mr. D. Kelly," 9s. 6d. ; sections 21 and 63, Mr. Mcßae, 5s 6d.

Mr. Robson, the lecturer, drew a large house on Saturday night, and, in the absence of the minister, officiated at the English Church yesterday.

The boiler of a steam engine connected with a horse threshing machine while working yesterday at Opua, William Kings settlement, by some means exploded, breaking the m.i chine in small pieces and wounding six natives, two seriously.. They most miraculously escaped death. On Thursday last, a native at Parihaka hung himself. The cause is said to be jealousy. Two hundred Constabulary leave this coast for Waikato on Thursday next. It is supposed to open up he oountry.

City of New York, with the January Colonial mails arrived at San Francisco from Auckland on 28th instant, two da3 T s' late.

AUCKLAND, This Day.

A Women's Emigration Society has been formed. Lady O'Rorke has been appointed President, and an influential committee appointed. The object is the introduction of respectable female servants.

CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday.

It is proposed to hold two race meetings, also a general athletic sports gathering, an interprovincial football tournament, and an interprovincial bicycle meeting during the Exhibition period.

DUNEDIN, This Day.

The sale of the leases of the Otago runs was commenced to-day, and had to be conducted in the Garrison Hall, owing to the large attendance. Lauder Station, at the base of the Dunstan Ranges, was the first submitted; released at three times the assessment. £'10 bids only were taken. The annual rental is 12416. Dalgetty's run was released by Spenser, at an increase of 20 ger cent, on the upset rental.
