SERIOUS ACCIDENT ON THE RAILWAY.

A serious accidedent happened on Friday afternoon at Sentry Hill to a man named Gough, fireman on the New Ply-mouth-Hawera line. He was in tho act of crossing the line to join bis engine which was about leaving for the down trip when an engine, which was shunting trucks, came up suddenly, and the cowcatcher knocked him down, and he was dragged along the line for a distance of about sixty yards. He was picked up much bruised about the back, and with a nasty scalp wound. He was taken into New Plymouth at 5 o'clock by special train, and taken at once to the Hospital. On medical examination, it was found that he had received serious injuries to his spine, and it was feared that there are also internal injuries. The Herald states that on enquiry at the Hospital on Saturday morning, the unfortunate man was reported to be in a very low state, and the full extent of his injuries cannot yet be ascertained. A passenger by the train informs us that the occurrence was purely accidental, and that no blame can be attached to anyone except the unfortunate man himself.
