MANAIA.

(from our own correspondent.) Our township has, during the past few days, appeared a little more animated than it has since the holidays. This is mainly attributable to the road works now being carried on. During the week a party of A.C.'s have been busily engaged in forming the road leading to the bush, Messrs. Kearns and O'Donnell, the contractors for gravelling the first portion of the road, have also commenced their work, and are makiug good progress. The gravel, though not very stoney, is said by competent judges to be of good quality and to bind like concrete. The contractors- for gravelling the second portion of the road will commence operations in a day or two, and as they have discovered excellent gravel close to the work, they will be able to push the job through quickly. Such being the case, we may expect to have a really good road to the bush next winter.

Mr. Syrne has been able to make a start with the school building at last. I am informed that it is his intention to keep a good staff of hands on, and trusts thereby to bo able to complete the works at as early a date as possible. Messrs. Barker and Hurley's new offices are now in course of erection ; aho several new cottages in and around the township.

Yesterday, a young man in a state of intoxication rode into the township, and immediately commenced a series of wild equestvmr antics on the main thoroughfare, theroby making it dangerous for pedestrians who might chance to be near. Fortunata'.y, Constable Franklyn was on duty close bj r , and soon put an end to the j'onng man's mad gallop ; but it was not until three or four A.C.'s arrived on the

scene, and the frog's march was resorted to, that the inebriate could be got to the lock-up.
