AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

[Reuter's Special to Star.] Melbourne, Yesterday.

The stewards of the Victorian Racing Club have decided to disqualify Mata and his rider for ever, for dark riding in the recent races.

At a meeting of 6000 persons, held last week, it was decided to send a petition to the Governor for the reprieve of Ned Kelly. Mr. Gaunson, the promoter of the agitation, presented a petition on Saturday to the Government, praying that a reprieve may be granted to Ned Kelly, who was sentenced to death. A procession with the same object was abandoned. There are a great many petitions being signed for presentation to the Executive Council for the same purpose.
