A rumor is current that Mr. Mansford, R.M., is likely to retire on pension, and that he will be succeeded by Mr. R. Beetham, R.M., Timaru. It is also stated that Mr. Wardell, R.M., Wairarapa, will retire on a pension.
The Customs revenue for the quarter amounts to £645,000, or £19,000 over* the estimate. The beer duty realised £11,000. The other classes are also found to be satisfactory.
The Native prisoners arrived from Dunedin on Thursday morning. They were interviewed by the Native Minister, and formally released from custody. The Hinemoa 1 ft with them in the afternoon for New Plymouth.
A man named Wbittington fell overboard from the steamer Tui while on her voyage from Kaikoura to this port. Efforts were made to save him, but without success. He leaves a wife and family in England.

Tawhiao is "keeping his people busily employed on the land, cultivating in the bush between Hikurangi and Kawhia. The Kingites assume an attitude almost of indifference as to what is passing at Tarauaki. Some Maoris allied with the Waikato tribes have got into trouble there through their' fencing proclivities, but Tawhiao's followers say that "it s ryes them right, and that all this comes of their leaving their legitimate monarch, and putting faith in an usurper."
