CARLYLE.
■ [.+ (FROM OUROWN CORRESPONDENT.) Carlyle, Friday. Messrs. Downes and Proctor are fetching their heavy pile timber by rail to Waitotara. From thence it will be carted to Patea. The County Council can enforce the powers of a Wellington Provincial Ordinance south of the river, by putting- a penalty on each load in excess of a certain weight — 25 owt. on two wheels, or 50 cwt. on four wheels — of Is. per cwt. in excess. The subject was brought under the notice of members at the lost meeting by Councillor Bridge, and it is not unlikely that the. County Council will take steps for enforcing the penalty. The Whenuakura school committee, at their last meetinar, considered a complaint from Mr. H. McLoughlin, with reference to the treatment of his child. The following resolution was passed: — "That this committee, having heard the complaint of Mr. McLoughlin as to the treatment of his daughter, Mary, on the Ist September last, are of opinion that no evidence has been adduced to show any unnecessary punishment, but would recommend the teacher not to keep young children after school hours in the afternoon."
The Fatea Corps has accepted a challenge from the Wanganui City Rifles, and the match will take place to-morrow. At a meeting of the Town Board, on Monday, Messrs. Taplin, Adams, and Sherwood were appointed a committee to wait upon the Minister of Lands, when in Patea, and confer with him on the question of appointing trustees for the Recreation Ground. • -
