NORMANBY SCHOOL.
A meeting of the committee was held on Monday evening. Present — Messrs. Quin (chairman), McDowall, Richardson, Bowe, Sisley, and Hunger.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
CORRESPONDENCE.
A letter from the Secretary of the Education Board stating; that the Government had decided to reduce the capitation grant to one-half. . Letter from same, re leasing Ibe school acre. Letter from same enclosing cheque for the late teacher's salary. Another letter was recaived from the Secretary to the Board, stating that Mr. Hill's resignation had been accepted, and that Mr. McCutchan had been appointed, subject to his passing the necessary examination. A letter was also read, stating that Mr. Hill had sent in a correct list of books, &c. A letter was also read from Mr. McDowall accepting the office of honorary secretary to the committee, and stating also that Mr. Hill had handed in a correct inventory of all school property, and that Mr. McCutchan had now taken possession. A letter was handed in from Mr. McCutchan, which stated he had been compelled to suspend a lad named Herman Gungall for gross misconduct. Enclosed was a note written by this lad to a little girl in the school. The note was handed round for inspection, but it was of such a character as to be quite unfit for publication. It was resolved that the Secretary write to the Board to know the longest term the -committee could lease the school acre.
The committee then went into the case of the lad Gungall. The Chairman stated that he considered the teacher had acted according to the strict- letter of the law. — Mr. McDowall said the committee must deal with the matter at once. This boy was the worst in the school, and he ought not to be admitted to the school again. — Mr. Sisley thought it was a serions thing to expel a boy from the school. — Mr. Rowe stated that he had kept his little girl away from school on account of the bad language used by some of the children. The Chairman said parents had their remedy; they could appeal, first to the Committee, and secondly to the Board.
Mr. McDowall proposed — "That the teacher's action be confirmed ; and that the lad, Herman Gungall, be expelled from the school during the present committee's term of office." Seconded by Mr. Richardson, and carried unanimously.
It was resolved that the Secretary write to the Board, asking for a grant for the enlargement of the school. It was resolved to supplement the balance from the picnic by £3 ; the total to be spent in prises ; such prizes to be non- sectarian. Messrs. McDowall and Quin were appointed a committee to select the books, which will be presented by the inspector on the recommendation of the teacher.
It was resolved that Mr. C. E. Gibson's resignation be accepted, and that the appointment of his successor be left over till next meeting. It was also agreed that the school should be closed for three or four days while Mr. McCutchan was away for examination.
After voting two small snmsfor repairs, and passing an account for stationery, the meeting adjourned.
