CARLYLE

(from oub own correspondent.) Carlyle, Tuesday.

Cricket operations have again commenced for the season. On the last two Saturdays scratch games have been played. When the luxurious crop of grass hay been eaten or mown down, and the roller has been freely used, we shall be able to allow our visitors an excellent wicket, as the turf is in splendid condition. Matches -with Hawava. and othet district clubs will very shortly "be arranged. Last evening a meeting of the club was wo *? held in the Albion Hotet, Dr. Croft in the chair. Mr. Eupert Jacorub was elected captain for the ensuing year, and Mr. Samuel Taplin was re-elected secretary and treasurer, an office which he has ably filled for several years. Dr. Croft, Messrs. Tennent and Pringle were elected members of committee. T,he opening match of the season will take place on Saturday first — Married v. Single members of the club.

A considerable crowd of persons assembled at the heads and on the wharf to welcome the arrival of the steamer Wakatu, which it is understood will now be engaged in the Wellington, Wanganui, and Patea trade. Sh is a longer boat than the Patea, but does not appear to have more beam. She is owned in Nelson by Mr. J. S. Cross, jun., and partners, and is commanded by Captain Evans. A reduction in the rate of freight is already announced. We had a most successful parade of stud horses on Saturday last.
