NOTES AND QUERIES.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAB.
Sib, — So the Town Board is awakening from its lethargy, and we are to have the acre leased at last ; that is, providing no busy-body takes legal advice, and has the proposed sale upset, as on a previous occasion. I would suggest that a suitable site be reserved for the Town Board offices, thus carrying out the ostensible object of the reserve, and that the rent derived from the portion leased be applied towards the erection of such building.
Some time ago, amongst others a subscription, came the rounds for the purpose ot establishing a town hoard for Hawera. I don't know the exact amount raised, but fancy the total came to nigh .£IOO, -with which the instruments were purchased. Under Mr. H. R. Baker's leadership, a very creditable set of musicians were licked into shape, and performed, affording pleasure to the settlers of Normanby and Hawera at their annual Christmas and New Year's sports. Since then, the band has become, to all appearances, defunct. The instruments are scattered about the district — mo one has control of them — individual members of the band having possession. Seeing that the public subscribe the money, I think that the instruments, should be vested in trustees, 80 that they would be ready for any new revival of musical spirit. Otherwise, the instruments \nU fox the most part gra>dually disappear or be destroyed, and then in due course Hawera liberality will again be taxed for another subscription to a pro* Eosed new set of band instruments. lam appy to say that some of the instruments are in good hands, and I don't see why the trustees could not allow them to continue to have the use of them ; but they must certainly be vested in trustees. "A stitch in time" is my motto. Let the Town Board be appointed trustees forthwith. — I am, &c,
Diogenes.
