A brakesman named John Kenny, employed on the Kaipara railway, fell off the trucks, and the wheel passed over his legs. He died at noon. Wellington, Friday night. Telegraphic communication has been interrupted south of Blenheim all day. At the Resident Magistrate's Court, H. A. Willis, a schoolmaster at the Hutt, was sentenced to two months' hard labor for assaulting a resident there, named Jordan, who had made some charges against him.
It is stated that the P. and 6. steamers will shortly make Wellington a port of call, and that this will be the distributing point. On a detective going to the Empire Hotel to arrest Matthew Henderson for Offences committed at Christchurch, the door was found to be locked. On breaking in the door, they found Henderson and a young lady named Bligh (supposed to be the daughter of a stonemason in Ghristclrarch) lying on the bed, apparently dead. It was ascertained that they had taken strychnine. Emetics were at once applied, but without avail in the case of Henderson, who died in a few minutes. The lady was alive, but was in a critical condition.
The inquest on the body of Mnthew Henderson, who committed suicide on Wednesday, was held te-day. A number of witnesses were examined, who proved that the deceased had taken strychnine. Letters were produced which showed that the act had been premeditated. The jury, after two hours' deliberation, returned a verdict of felo-de-se.
It is reported here that the natives at Parihaka have been strewing fern stalks along the line of road, with their points to the Constabulary camp. Maori experts are' at a loss to know what it signifies. My. Moss, M.H.8., hag given aoiice o£ twelve resolutions, which, if carried, would resuscitate Provincialism, but they have not a chance of being carried.
The Governor and suite will take then: departnre for Sydney in the steamship Rotomahana, on the 3rd proximo, en route for England.
A nugget, weighing 421bs, of nearly pme fold, has been found at Palmers ton, in forth Australia.
Nelson, Friday night. At the volunteer inspection, Captain Bunny, the commanding officer, asked for a decision as to whether the respective corps of the district would continue their services after the discontinuance of the capitation to the Artillery, City Rifles, Stoke Rifles, and Waimea Rifles. It was decided to a man to continue their services.
I Christchurch, Friday night. The construction of the new breastwork and jetty, at Lyttelton, was commenced on Thursday. They will be completed in twelve months.
Invercaboill, Friday nijrht. A fire at Crosbie's farm, at Wyndham, destroyed two sacks of oats. A steam threshing machine was also injured.
