HARBOR INQUIRY AND OTHER MATTERS.

(from our own correspondent.)

Wellington, Tuesday.

The proceedings before the committee cannot be reported until the Houses publish them; but I hear the New Plymouth harbor petition was before the Public Petitions Committee of the Legislative Council last week, and on Monday. The engineer and secretary of the New Plymouth Harbor Board arrived last week, and they, with other witnesses, have been examined before the committee of the Legislative Council, bat the evidence has not transpired. The New Plymouth Harbor Board petition came before the Public Petitions Committee of the House of Representatives this morning, when the case was opened.

The railway to Hawera is recommended in the report of the Commissioners on Railways as a work to be completed, and is spoken of as a work to be done.

I have no doubt satisfactory arrangements will be made for receiving applications for laud, and receiving and refunding deposits at Hawera; and arrangements will probably be made for issuing Arms Act licenses for the sale of gunpowder for sporting purposes also at Hawera.

I also hear the petition of the Hawera Light Horse to be placed on the same footing as the Waikato Volunteers, is still tinder consideration.

I cannot give you any farther information as to the result of the harbor petition than that interest in the question is shown by members of both Houses, and it is regarded as raising a large and important question.

It has been decided to issue revolvers to the Hawera Light Horse.
