Ai the B.M. Court, on Wednesday, before C. A. Wray, Esq., Dr. Croft, and Major Noake, Mr. W. A. G. Winchcomb, lately collector to the Wairoa Highway Board, was charged at the instance of Mr. Bridge, chairman of that body, with embezzling certain sums of money paid to him as rates. The accused was ably defended by Mr. Hodge, of Wanganui, and was acquitted.
At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Town Board, held on Monday evening, a somewhat lively discussion took place on the Recreation Ground question. Some time ago, the Board asked the Minister of Lands to place the ground under the Public Domains Act, 1860. The TJnder-Secretary for Crown Lands replied that the Government was desirous of placing the ground under the charge of a board of five or seven gentlemen (to be nominated by the chairmen of the County Council and Townßoard) who would interest themselves in improving and planting, and making it available for horticulture, arboriculture, sports, &c. Daring the discussion, the selfish action which had been taken by Mr. Taplin was strongly condemned by the chairman and Messrs. Aitchison and Adams. It was resolved that the nnmber of trustees should be seven — four to be elected by the general public, and three by the Board.
