Wellington, Tuesday .night; The Police Court was occupied afl day with hearing thirty-one informations for sly-grog selling, laid against keepers of oyster saloons and houses of ill-fame. Fines were inflicted varying from £5 to £10. An old resident, named Dr. Bennett, aged 72 years, died to-day. Christchtjrch, Tuesday night. The medical officers decided that the sickness prevailing on board the ship-Nor-folk is not small-pox, and they recommend the release of the vessel. ' Napier, Tuesday night. There was an extraordinary scene in the Supreme Court to-day. When John Boyd, alias Hutton, was brought up on the charge of obstructing the railway traffic, he pleaded guilty ; but when asked if he had anything to say for himself, lie launched out into the most horrible profanity and filthy language, swearing at Judge Richmond, at the gaoler, and at the police. His Honor remarked that the man must be mad, when, with a string of oaths, Boyd replied that it was his Honor who was mad. He was sentenced to fifteen years penal servitude, his Honor remarking that he was either a dangerous lunatic or a criminal of the worst class. He added that he would represent the case to the Minister of Justice.
Herika, for roasting another Maori, was sentenced to one month's hard labor. His Honor said he did not think the prisoner acted with any wrong intention.
