At a conference yesterday, in reference to the Fire Brigades intending to lock up their stations, owing to the stoppage of the subsidies, the . Insurance Companies presented their ultimatum, which was to the effect that they would defray onethird of the cost of one efficient brigade, with a paid- superintendent. The City Council have yet to consider the matter. It is stated that some natives at Petona have obstructed the road leading to Mr. Gear's slaughter yard. Mr. Gear, it is believed, will take proceedings against the offenders. n The body of Devereaux, one of the men drowned in the Wairarapa Lake, has been recovered. I The railway returns for the four weeks ending the 6th March, are .£60,306 18s 7d, and the expenditure £42,980 11s 7d. The postal revenue of the colony for the quarter ending March, 1880, amounted to £46,625 18s. Dunedin, Friday night. The charge of murder against Butler commenced yesterday. The prisoner defends himself. The case is still proceeding, but that for the prosecution will probably conclude to-night.

Invebcabgxll, Friday night. A lad named Arthur Cox has been committed for trial for the murder of Robert Curtis on Easter Monday.

Geahamstown, Friday night.

A man named John Syveret was killed instantaneously to-day by a log falling on him. The Star states that the expenses of the Lincolnshire delegates were borne by this colony, and will amount to .£I,OOO.

Nelson, Friday night.

The charge of perjury brought against Mr. Acton Adams, M.H.R., was dismissed.
