PLUNKET MOTHERS’ CLUB
♦*♦... POPULAR NURSE PARE WELLER
The last fortnightly meeting of the Hutt Valley Central District Plunket Mothers’ Club took the form of a social evening in honour of Nurse Twentyman, whose retirement at the end of the month severs her long connection with the Plunket Society and terminates forty years’ service to mothers and babies. A record attendance of members marked the occasion, Mrs. King’s home, Hautana Street, being the meeting place. Mrs. France, club president, welcomed Nurses Twentyman and Richards, guest artists and club members, and presented the guest of honour with a posy of violets. Then the evening swung into a gay programme of light music, games and chat. The following items were much enjoyed: “In My Garden” and “White Dove” were sung by Mrs. Beckford, Mrs. Liebezeit accompanying her. Mrs. Grigg rendered two pianoforte solos, “Devotion” (Lizst) and “Papillon” (Greig), and also accompanied Mrs. Liebezeit in her singing of “Vespers,” “Bless This House,” and “My Prayer.” Mrs. Craig Mackenzie gave a short reading of poems, “The Blacksmith’s Wife” and “A New Zealand Christmas,” both by Eileen Duggan, followed by two other studies, “A Little More” and “Eighteen.” Charming sprays of flowers were presented to each performer at the conclusion of her items.
The competition winner was Nurse Richards, and much amusement was caused by a Mothercraft Quiz. In making a presentation to Nurse Twentyman from the club, and another from the mothers whose babies she has recently attended, Mrs. France expressed the regret of the mothers in losing her services and their good wishes for her long and happy retirement in Christchurch. Nurse Twentyman suitably replied, thanking those present 'for the warmth of their wishes and the jollity of her send-off party.
