CENTRAL AUXILIARY MEETS L, ! ELECTION OF OFFICERS The 52nd annual meeting of the Central Auxiliary of the Baptist Union of New Zealand, held at Lower Hutt, was attended by over one hundred delegates. The Rev. R. L. Fursdon, of Island Bay, was inducted as president by the Rev. J. R. Graves, of Hastings. The Mayor, Mr. E. P. Hay, welcomed delegates at a luncheon in the Horticultural Hall. New ministers welcomed were: The Revs. J. D. Jenson, Nelson; R. G. Bycroft, Berhampore; C. H. Barton, Masterton; and E. G. Payton, Richmond, Nelson. The annual report stated that the total amount allocated to the central auxiliary during the year for the Peace and Thanksgiving Fund was £4723. More than £IOOO has been allocated for building in the new State housing area at Taita, besides £1223 for Epuni and £llsO for Naenae. The home mission committee considered the possibilities of future extension of church work, including the conducting of a survey of all new housing areas in early development, and the arrangement of strategic sites for churches and manses.
Waste of Foodstuffs
The meeting decided that the Government’s attention be drawn to the serious waste of vital foodstuffs, used in the manufacture of alcoholic liquors and of the serious waste of cargo space and the use of sterling funds in the importation of alcoholic liquors, and that action be taken to reduce to the absolute minimum this item of national expenditure. The election of officers resulted: President, the Rev. A. R. Fursdon; president-elect, the Rev. H. G. Goring; vice-presidents, the Rev. A. L. Silcock, Messrs. G. S. Thompson and R. A. Comber; secretary, Mr. W. Kean; treasurer, Mr. A. G. Carter; assistant secretary, Mr. G. E. Windsor; auditor, Mr. J. J. Baldwin.
