TREE 586 YEARS OLD
MIGHTY FOREST MONARCH Tin' largest Douglas fir tree ever brought to ground—a tree that held much good lumber before Columbus discovered America —was felled in the prime forests south-west of Mt. Rainier in western Washington, says an American paper. The tree was I2fl S)i:i in diameter. Records ol the Pacific North-west Forest Experiment Station of the United States Forest Service reveal thai the largest tree previously reported was 12ft Gin in diameter. Two larger trees, one in Oregon an I one in Washington, are known to be standing, but are being preserved until they fall of old age. Annual rings show the forest monarch was 586 years old. The big tree contained enough wood to produce 341),464 square feet of plywood, enough to build 58 complete plywood houses with the panels covering walls both inside and out.
