TRANSIT HOUSING AREA
TRENTHAM MILITARY CAMP > The Hutt Valley Returned Services Association recently asked the support of the Lower Hutt City Council of a recommendation that portion of the Trentham Military Camp, where it is understood there is available space,, be set aside as a transit housing area for the Hutt Valley. It was stated that representations had been made to the Government lor the setting up of a transit camp, and the Association would be very grateful for any assistance the Council could offer towards having the scheme put into operation. Council Supports Proposal
At Monday night's meeting of the City Council the Mayor said that as a member of the Rehabilitation Committee he knew that the biggest problem was the settling of returned servicemen in the smaller type of house. With Mr. J. E. F. Vogel (representing the Returned Servicemen's Association) and Mr. Fletcher (a member of the Council staff) he had visited Trentham. In one row. they had found 32 huts, each of which could be converted into four two-bedroom units. They could be adapted very easily and at the cost of only £ll'i per unit. The huts were well ventilated and the camp was well drained. It.was quite the best scheme that could be devised to relieve the position in the Hutt vailey. He moved that the R.S.A., the Government and other local bodies be supported in providing a 'transit housing area at Trentham.
Cr. F. Lonsdale seconded and other councillors supported the motion, which was carried.
