HUTT PARK RATES
REQUEST FOR EXEMPTION ATTITUDE OF CITY COUNCIL The finance committee reported to the Lower Hutt City Council on Monday night that at the last meeting of the committee a letter was received from the Hutt Park Committee advising that it was its intention to take steps in an endeavour to hfj|ve the Park .exempted from the payment of rates, and requesting that the Council view the matter favourably and facilitate the necessary Act being brought before rarliament, by agreeing to the proposal. The Mayor stated that if it was agreed that the Hutt Park be nonrateable it would mean that the Council would in effect pay the rates in full. Under the existing arrangement the rates were paid in proportion by the three interested local bodies and there was no reason why Petone and Eastbourne should not continue to contribute. Councillors Lonsdale and Muir drew attention to the difficulties facing the Hutt Park Committee, and said that it was impossible to plan a long term programme when there was uncertainty regarding the payment of rates. It was decided .to suggest to the Hutt Park Committee that it explore the possibility of arranging a longterm agreement with the three contributing local bodies, in lieu of obtaining legislation exempting the committee from the payment of rates.
