CASES OF HARDSHIP
HOUSING SHORTAGE PROBLEM. Some sad cases of hardship through shortage of houses were quoted by Mr. F. W. Doige at his meeting, in the Taita Hall last week. In a small place like Tauranga there were 2CO people searching for homes. Two young returned service men were paying £4 per week for bed and breakfast, leaving them £1 10/- per week with which to pay for everything else. They said they could not carry on under those conditions.. Outside Auckland Mr. Holland had found a man and his wife and four small children living in a tin shed, with no sanitary conveniences. In another case a man and his wife and three children were living in a caravan. The wife could not stand the strain, and had to be taken to a mental hospital,
