EXCITING FIRE

CHILDREN'S NARROW ESCAPE Two children of Mr. and Mrs. A. Ivory, of Copelaiid Street—one an infant, the other a boy aged three years—had a narrow escape from a tragic death last week. It appears that the little boy, who was lying ill in a bedroom, lit some matches, which set alight to the bed and bedding. The child managed to get out on to the landing. Further along the passage a baby was lying in a cot; fortunately the door was shut and the window open, otherwise the infant might have been suffocated by the heavy smoke which billowed through the house. Neighbours who went to the scene with a hose were driven out by the smoke. Eventually the mother managed to get both children to safety. The fire brigade was summoned, and quickly extinguished the outbreak. The house was not damaged, but bed and bedding were badly burned.
